i’ve experienced overheating with 3 different roku steaming stick models purchased between 2017-2022. the roku stick 4k was only used a few times in a spare room by guests, yet it overheats less than 30 minutes after being plugged into the tv or hdmi switch.none of the troubleshooting tips recommended by roku resolved the problems their tech support said overheating is a defect. conveniently they only offer a 1 year warranty their solution was for me to buy yet another roku device. i’ll buy a different brand or upgrade to a smart tv as opposed to lining roku’s pockets with my hard earned cash.major fire safety hazard!!!
it’s connected to my brand new sharp tv but then when i hit the mute button it changes a function on the tv. and it’s near impossible to get any help from roku or amazon! be careful!
putting three stars instead of one so people read this. just google this product not charging and see what you find. on the roku site itself, multiple people returning and purchasing and this thing failing to charge. all roku ever says is try and reset the device and use another cable. if you're going to get roku, make sure it just takes standard aaa batteries. this thing sucks.
bought this less than a year ago. i actually bought 2. my other is fine -- for now. this one, i used it probably a few times over a few months. i had this on the tv in our bedroom so it's not watched regularly. after not watching it for a few months i go to use it, and it goes through an endless cycle of having to restart it then it turns itself off. researched the issue online, and others have had the same issue. the stick is basically a goner because nobody has been able to fix it.i reach out to roku support and after explaining what's going on, the person tells me they will look into it while i wait on hold. after 5 minutes they disconnect me. i reach out to another person and they are able to review the previous discussion i had with the other rep. they only offer the same advice as what i had already tried which was restarting it as it would not turn on. after me doing this a few times, the roku restarting, getting the load screen, then shutting off, i request a new roku as it's under warranty and i state that i will pay for the shipping myself as they do not. i was told i was going to get an email with the shipping label. it was never sent to me. i will never buy another roku again. they do not care about their customers from the experience i had and they use some overseas call center that is no help.
brand new stick and remote purchased as a package.like many customers, device would not pair with the remote.device defective out of the box.contacted roku support, nothing helpful beyondwhat is already in the support pages.returned for refund.
this device has hardware flaws. on top of that roku’s customer service people in india think they are doing a favor by answering their customer’s questions. netflix and youtube keeps crashing. roku blames your internet speed. ease of use is a problem if you want to find your local channels which are free.
just got my 5th roku streaming stick for a guest room and no problem with initial set up and then got to adding my channels and got messages over and over that channels could not be added. tried customer support and got none. ultimately got it working with the help of youtube. roku needs to do better with customer service.
about 6 months after i purchased this item, one of the buttons stopped working. making the device completely useless. i looked online and discovered that many other users had encountered the same problem.
when you purchase a streaming device, you shouldn’t be told by their customer service to fiddle with my router settings when everything else on my network is functioning properly. i foolishly purchased 3 of these devices. save your money and seek a streaming device that functions properly elsewhere
so since i have received the roku the remote has failed twice and roku thinks i should pay to send it back... it is dead it wont control anything yes it has new batteries yes i unplugged it for over 5 seconds yes i held the home and back button yes i looked for a pairing button in the battery compartment ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ugh and 37 minutes into my chat with technical support they are no help in the first 3 days when it failed i should have returned the entire order to amazon oh yeah i get to go to the post office stand in line after packing it up to then pay to ship it back al the while i cant use the stick ,,,,,
the roku itself works fine but i only had it for two weeks before the remote failed. called their customer service since i bought an annual plan and they went through troubleshooting ie; battery etc and informed me the remote itself was bad but no warranty on that of course. they told me to just go to walmart and buy another one because they were only 10 dollars. this was not true as the new, identical, remote is 20 dollars. it’s not as if the roku was expensive to begin with but i didn’t expect to have to add $20 within a couple of weeks. i know our options are somewhat limited but i would not buy this again and would opt for something else.
worked great for about a year but now cuts off due to high heat. will not buy this one again. cs no help as the warranty expired. not happy with roku...
at first, the roku was great. it breathed new life into our smart tv and supports 4k hdr. however the remote has always been a little funny and often would repeatedly turn the tv on and off when we go to turn it on for the first time in a day.now, we are 4 months past the warranty period and the device frequently freezes crashes to the boot screen. i cannot recommend this product anymore.

it worked okay for the first 6 months. it was functional, extremely slow, but not great. now, 1 year and few months later it is constantly glitching out, remote works until you try to move over any of the channels, then it freezes till you reset it.this was my second and final try using roku. won't be buying one again.
the most frequently used buttons on the remote have ceased to function. i did purchase in november 2022, it’s july 2024, but i’ve never had remote buttons just stop working before. the build quality seems not great. additionally, it seems to lag connecting to the internet more than any other device hooked up to the internet. my cellphone (which is almost 6 years old) or another smart tv (older than the phone) seem to load faster.i contacted roku support. i had to use one of those painfully slow chat features to try to fix the issue. they first made me do all the troubleshooting one should probably do before contacting support. over thirty minutes and i’m still being told things like check the batteries, re-pair it, make sure the batteries are the correct way, etc. ultimately, they agreed to replace the remote, just to get repeatedly get disconnected. it’s been over an hour and thirty minutes, still can’t seem to get a remote sent. ultimately, was told the remote was out of warranty, but that i should also contact amazon for a replacement? when i was referred through amazon?a lot of the stuff they asked about me or the remote is information that should be associated with the roku account you are forced to create and the app you have to download for anything to be functional. if they make me input all that information, why do i also have to provide it again? why do they even need to have an account and app to begin with.would not purchase again.
this was a very frustrating experience for a normal human being! 5 calls to roku-over an hour to spectrum-you better have a desktop-2 phones and a portable laprop berore you try to set this monstronsity up! not worth the time or money . just go out and buy a smart tv!
tldr;> roku has started adding intrusive new ads to the home screen without users' permission or consent which they've force-applied retroactively to older models of rokus regardless of model or date of purchase.when i purchased a roku instead of a fire tv or other similar device, it was based on the fact that there was only 1 ad on the home screen and i didn't have to look at it all the time.the most recent update has added a second ad on the home screen which is now visible even when the other ad is not and unlike most of the promotional extras they add to the home screen, there does not appear to be a way to remove it.i made an agreement with roku at the time of purchase. i researched the details of the product i was getting, what it's functionality was, and its value based on the price. i decided on this device based on the number and location of ads that were present in the interface.adding new ads to the home screen without my consent has fundamentally broken that purchase agreement. roku has changed the product i purchased without my consent. my roku is now less valuable as a result, value that the roku company has stolen from me - from all of us.if someone from roku broke into my house and replaced my streaming device with a less valuable one, they would be arrested. but that's exactly what roku has done to all their customers in the last couple weeks.the lesson here is: you don't own your roku. they can add new advertisements, change the interface, remove current functionality, anything they want. they pretend to sell you a device but they're actually only selling you a service, a service which they can change any time they decide they want to line their pockets a bit more at your expense. this is a great example of why we have to strengthen and expand consumer rights.
