the stick uses a remote that isn't like other roku remotes, and costs nearly as much as an entire new device set (with remote). it's disappointing to end up buying a whole new stick/remote package just because the unique and pricey remote fails (ok button giving out).go search amazon for replacement remotes for roku stick and see what i mean...
i ordered this device about a month ago and i haven’t got it yes and the shipping dates keep changing and dealing, i ordered the fire stick and i got it on same day which has more quality and better service and price, if you care about quality service and better device, then don’t waste your money on time on this device and from this location.
the roku itself works fine but i only had it for two weeks before the remote failed. called their customer service since i bought an annual plan and they went through troubleshooting ie; battery etc and informed me the remote itself was bad but no warranty on that of course. they told me to just go to walmart and buy another one because they were only 10 dollars. this was not true as the new, identical, remote is 20 dollars. it’s not as if the roku was expensive to begin with but i didn’t expect to have to add $20 within a couple of weeks. i know our options are somewhat limited but i would not buy this again and would opt for something else.
i really like my roku, but after 2 years it seems to be dying. for the past few months when i first turn it on, it reboots 3,4,or 5 times before it finally calms down. not all of the time, but the frequency is increasing. it's been too long to return it, so i need to look for another inexpensive one. this device should last much longer than 2 years. i looked at the ultra, but for 99 dollars it seems a little expensive. i see the 4k+ is 30 dollars so i'll try that and see.
this was a very frustrating experience for a normal human being! 5 calls to roku-over an hour to spectrum-you better have a desktop-2 phones and a portable laprop berore you try to set this monstronsity up! not worth the time or money . just go out and buy a smart tv!
tldr;> roku has started adding intrusive new ads to the home screen without users' permission or consent which they've force-applied retroactively to older models of rokus regardless of model or date of purchase.when i purchased a roku instead of a fire tv or other similar device, it was based on the fact that there was only 1 ad on the home screen and i didn't have to look at it all the time.the most recent update has added a second ad on the home screen which is now visible even when the other ad is not and unlike most of the promotional extras they add to the home screen, there does not appear to be a way to remove it.i made an agreement with roku at the time of purchase. i researched the details of the product i was getting, what it's functionality was, and its value based on the price. i decided on this device based on the number and location of ads that were present in the interface.adding new ads to the home screen without my consent has fundamentally broken that purchase agreement. roku has changed the product i purchased without my consent. my roku is now less valuable as a result, value that the roku company has stolen from me - from all of us.if someone from roku broke into my house and replaced my streaming device with a less valuable one, they would be arrested. but that's exactly what roku has done to all their customers in the last couple weeks.the lesson here is: you don't own your roku. they can add new advertisements, change the interface, remove current functionality, anything they want. they pretend to sell you a device but they're actually only selling you a service, a service which they can change any time they decide they want to line their pockets a bit more at your expense. this is a great example of why we have to strengthen and expand consumer rights.
why do you offer 50 different devices doing the same thing. different price points, all doing the same thing. each is super buggy i've purchased 5 rokus over the past 3 years all have bugged out. just a terrible product, remote is terrible same remote for all devices, oddly they all suck. don't buy roku save money find something else.
i had two rokus, when they worked they were decent streamers. i liked them better than the amazon stick because of fewer ads and a less cluttered screen. both rokus developed issues after just a week or two. they would freeze in the screen saver mode and would not awaken. regardless of any button input. the only way to unfreeze them was to unplug the power cable. doing a google search, this appears to be a fairly common occurrence. i returned them both and replaced them with apple tv units. night and day difference. the apples are three times as much but much faster, no ads, and so far, totally reliable. .
requires credit card other personal information to activate now we have 3 tv remotes, ughin hind-sight, a smart tv would have been better, but obviously more expensiveseems to be working as intended
recent power outages required moving from one tv to another due to cords from inverter generator. very difficult to pair, many tries (8-10) then it mysteriously worked. they have a phone app, but you only get 3 trial days then you have to pay. it works so you can operate your roku stick, but having to pay another $26 for lifetime is unreasonable, also the phone app has lots of ads, and has to be connected each time you use it. the phone app is not as convenient as the remote. the remote drops the pairing whenever the power goes off, such as when the generator runs out of fuel. re-pairing is inconsistent, you can easily spend an hour. i canned the roku and bought a fire stick. problem solved! the fire stick pairs automatically.i'm done with roku.
no problems for about the first month but after that a constant source of irritation. used to connect with wifi immediately but now it may take up to a minute or two to connect. sometimes it connects and there is no sound so you have to power off power back on wait a minute or two for it to connect and will then have sound or sometimes not and you must do it again. the remote gobbles up batteries they only last a month or so but the most frustrating part is it will tell you batteries are dead but they are really not. if you remove the cover over the batteries, pop them out of the remote, reinsert them it will work fine. you will have to perform this procedure once or twice daily but you can get another month or two out of the batteries. i have other remotes used daily that will have a battery life of 3-5 years. also depending on what tv brands you have the stick can have little quirks like giving you error messages etc. have wanted to smash controller in to wall so many times i can't count but like i say what do you expect for $50.
