roku sticks are fine. they aren’t providing any valuable service though. if it was convenient to just connect a pc to my tv and navigate streaming websites with a remote i’d do that. it’s not convenient which means i have to use a streaming stick. now i want that stick to get out of the way as much as possible. instead roku just keeps pumping more and more ads into the service. do yourself a favor and get a used apple tv on ebay. way less adds and integrates much nicer if you have an iphone.
you know i was really excited about getting this and replacing my first generation firestick, however, you lack one key feature that i even had on my first generation fire stick, the ability to connect bluetooth headphones to it. guess what their 1990s version of technology wants you to do? they want you to download their app on your phone so they can get even more into your business and then run the sound through your phone to your headphones. hell no. what's more messed up is that in the settings it suggests that you're going to be able to but it only allows you to connect to remotes. this will be returned and i haven't even had 24 hours.
just know that the remote in the listing is not the remote you will receive. the remote listed shows the programmable 1 2 buttons but the remote you will receive does not have these. pretty misleading.
i bought this unit to replace an older (10+ years) roku unit. the older unit had a headphone jack which i used at night when others in the house were sleeping. i assumed this unit would also...but, it does not and there is no mention of this change in the product description.
in the usual modern way that everything in life is a grubby effort to extract money from you, roku requires that you register your credit card and some personal info in order for this to work.naturally they argue so that you can then seamlessly purchase programs, but i purchased this stick (my second one) to watch the free old-time tv programs. no need for your credit card for that!advertising is one thing, but how can i give a gift to a young person they does not yet have a credit card?otherwise easy to set up and use.
tldr;> roku has started adding intrusive new ads to the home screen without users' permission or consent which they've force-applied retroactively to older models of rokus regardless of model or date of purchase.when i purchased a roku instead of a fire tv or other similar device, it was based on the fact that there was only 1 ad on the home screen and i didn't have to look at it all the time.the most recent update has added a second ad on the home screen which is now visible even when the other ad is not and unlike most of the promotional extras they add to the home screen, there does not appear to be a way to remove it.i made an agreement with roku at the time of purchase. i researched the details of the product i was getting, what it's functionality was, and its value based on the price. i decided on this device based on the number and location of ads that were present in the interface.adding new ads to the home screen without my consent has fundamentally broken that purchase agreement. roku has changed the product i purchased without my consent. my roku is now less valuable as a result, value that the roku company has stolen from me - from all of us.if someone from roku broke into my house and replaced my streaming device with a less valuable one, they would be arrested. but that's exactly what roku has done to all their customers in the last couple weeks.the lesson here is: you don't own your roku. they can add new advertisements, change the interface, remove current functionality, anything they want. they pretend to sell you a device but they're actually only selling you a service, a service which they can change any time they decide they want to line their pockets a bit more at your expense. this is a great example of why we have to strengthen and expand consumer rights.
the remote randomly unpairs, yes with fresh batteries. i use the app to re-pair the remote. now the app doesn't recognize the device on my network, so it's now useless to me. app forces you to see ads before being able to use it as a remote.roku has added more ads to the home screen. one of the things i liked originally was the uncluttered ui, but they ruined that.
i’m definitely to the point of regret with this 4k stick. too much advertising just like ama7on. and the remote works intermittently. the buttons and batteries are fine and all of a sudden the remote just won’t work. you have to wait a lil bit and it will start working again but who the heck wants that. netflix hasn’t been working well on it for a while now. max app runs and loads slowly. oh, and if you do decide to buy the roku anyways, make sure to get one with the rechargeable remote because you go through batteries like crazy if you don’t. (if you use it a lot.)
images and branding of image leaded me to believe you just had to plug the stick into the back of the tv, but it still has to have wires connected. the stick design seems more to sell an idea as opposed to a functionally easy product to use. once installed , product works exactly as described. easy to use interface, no problems what so ever. i just thought there wouldn’t be wires. my mistake.
bought this to take with me, and none of the apps work outside of the us. looked at a review between this and the fire stick and was told this was better. bie lie, firestick is far more useful than this. total waste of my money and time
fairly easy to set up but the cord needed to be longer. after we got it set up, there wasn't any sound. i went to roku to try to find a fix. looks like we aren't the only ones with the same problem. seems the only fix is to buy roku's speakers. they don't tell you that before you buy it.
i got this to see what the fuss was about, and for one main reason, because it seemed my lg g3 couldn't add some streaming channels, such as criterion.the device did add the couple other channels i wanted to add. but any other benefits - some great interface, fast to use - not seeing it.in fact, it felt annoying enough to use, i've reverted to using the tv to watch most content, and only switch to this to watch the channels only it gets.this isn't a detailed criticism, but just a reaction based on how the decide seemed to use, where i didn't like it much.
we ordered this so that we could stream from various sources that we use at home - netflix, pbs passport, youtube tv, etc. -, on tvs we find in vacation rentals. sounded like a great idea. i never finished the installation after finding that there was no way to limit roku’s sharing of information it collects and that setting up a required roku account requires honest responses to intrusive questions for “marketing purposes”. that coupled with the fact that roku demands a credit card, even though we have already subscribed to the services we want, and that the roku home screen shows advertising just makes the roku more trouble than it is worth for casual, infrequent use. we are returning it. why cannot someone sell a simple hardware device without bombarding us with unwanted advertising?
after several attempts to pair remote, i had to keep the remote 1 inch from the antenna on the supplied usb cord. then pairing worked flawlessly. this is not in the instructions or online help.
