i was so excited when i got my owala! when it arrived i noticed it had a smell, like a minty smell. of course, i cleaned it and decided to take it with me to the office. as soon as i used it i noticed it had the same smell. it hadn't gone away. i thought, well maybe i didn't clean it very well? i have left this bottle with water for two days, have used different sponges, and different cleaning methods, and this smell does not go away. it smells like listerineish? but i don't want to smell that when i'm drinking my water! i thought that maybe its a desinfectant that they use but man, i do not know what to do with this smell. i can't use the bottle because i feel like i'm drinking minty water. which, btw, it does not taste like that, its just the smell that its really offputting. not sure what to do as i'm not using the bottle.. maybe it will go away at some point? aside from that, i love the concept of this bottle and loved how it looked! the white color is really nice too.
i purchased both the 24oz and 32 oz tumblers. the silicone parts in both lids had this awful unbearable smell that even affected the taste of my water. i emailed owala's customer service, and they gave me the most ridiculous suggestions, so 1 star for owala's customer service. one suggestion given was to put newspaper in my tumbler. what?!?!?! i searched online for alternate solutions. i tried everything from soaking the silicone parts in white vinegar, cleaning them with baking soda and lemon and etc. none of them worked. finally, i read a post that suggested putting the silicone parts in the oven for 20 minutes at 320 f. this reduced the smell, but it was still there. i basically did 3 rounds of 20 minutes in the oven..and finally, the awful smell was gone. i don't think we should go to these lengths to try to get the awful smell out of the silicone parts. good quality silicone shouldn't have this awful chemical smell/taste, right? ...so while the design/functionality of the tumbler itself is excellent, i question the materials used to make this tumbler....
right when i took it out of the amazon bag it smelled heavily like perfume. i don’t know if this is from the manufacturer or from amazon. you dont need to bathe in perfume. now i have a headache
i liked the idea of this water bottle. i took several washed to get rid of the smell and taste. the bottle slipped out of my hand and to cap broke instantly rendering it useless. disappointing waste of 40 bucks.disappointing customer service. i’ve had many water bottles over the years and surprised how easy this broke, this lasted 30 days and owala is fine with that
i bought into the hype and got this water bottle. the first thing i noticed was when i drink the lid smells of mint, and i hate that smell. others smell it too, and its not just me. i reached out to owala and they basically said they can't do anything but wash it. i have washed it multiple times and it still smells. for me, the poor customer service and product quality is poor, it just doesn't seem like a 30 dollar bottle to me.
i really like design of these bottle with different colors option and very comfortable to drink. but the sealing part of the lid smells like a burned tire or something like that.
i want to start off by saying i really love this water bottle so far. it checks off all my needs: options for straw or gulping, with the straw hidden and protected so that it doesn’t bend if i drop the thing (which i always do). its easy to wash, fits into a cup holder, and isn’t too bulky. it insulates really well. it feels nice in my hand and has a handle that can be tucked out of my way if i want.however for some reason when it arrived, it tasted and smelled heavily of soap or laundry detergent?it’s really pungent. i thought if i just washed it, it would go away but it’s still really bad. i get hit with the taste of soap every time i drink from it. i’m really sensitive to taste and smell and i’m already a finicky water drinker, so if it doesn’t go away, it kind of ruins the bottle for me . if push comes to shove, i can ask for a replacement and hopefully the new one won’t taste like soap, but i’ll give it a few more days and see if the taste subsides. it just sucks to anticipate having a functional bottle and then have to reorder just because it smells .
my daughter was so excited to get on owala, and keeps trying to use it, but it smells so strongly like voc’s that it’s unbearable to drink from. we keep washing it and letting it air out with the hope that the toxic plastic smell will go away, but 10 days later of doing that it still smells. totally disappointed.if that toxic smell will ever go away i’m sure it will be a great water bottle
i really like the design and color options but there are some serious negatives as well. i hand washed it before the first use and the smell of dawn dish soap permeated the flip-top seal. i tried soaking it in water and then vinegar but nothing would make it go away. every sip from it made me feel like i was drinking soapy water! the threads are too shallow so when i tried to tighten it to where the spout would line up with the bottle it would strip out which caused some leaks. the item description states cupholder friendly base but it doesn't fit in my cupholder or the one in my girlfriend's car. i haven't had any problems with anything breaking on it yet but it's only a week old and i haven't dropped it.
