i bought a roku to replace a fire stick because of the fire stick’s messy and ad ridden menu system. the fire stick remote is able to control other devices, but the roku remote can only control the tv. if your tv doesn’t support control via hdmi then you can’t control the receiver/audio device. not sure why it can’t as the amazon remote can. doesn’t make much sense not to support other, non-tv devices, especially when competitor’s products do.menu is less cluttered compared to the fire stick though, which earns back a couple stars from me.
the stick uses a remote that isn't like other roku remotes, and costs nearly as much as an entire new device set (with remote). it's disappointing to end up buying a whole new stick/remote package just because the unique and pricey remote fails (ok button giving out).go search amazon for replacement remotes for roku stick and see what i mean...
bought 4 of these for various locations. remotes for 2 of them have developed same issue and won’t toggle right. common issue according to chats. look at replacement remotes and they cost more than getting new unit
so this is a standard streaming device if you have used amazon’s fire stick then same thing the biggest difference is that the remote is terrible you are constantly replacing the batteries. i am replacing the batteries like once a week. i have tv remotes that i have the batteries in from last year, and don’t remember changing the batteries on the fire stick remote that often
i love my fire tablet, so i ditched roku and got the amazon fire stick. the problems keep popping up. i only have one app because i only watch discovery+. i get messages about loading errors and have to reset the remote. it gets tiresome. that takes a lot of time. i never had this problem with roku. neither of them is going to be great. there are problems with both. but this one is so frequent and annoying that i'm going to unplug and forget the fire stick.
love the interface, easy for non tech people to use. the remote is often not responsive or very slow to respond. tech support has their standard fixes - it does get a little old when you have to re pair, change batteries, remove and reinsert batteries, etc, etc, every time you call support or two or three times to get through a show or video. very frustrating not to be able to turn it on or off, pause it, fast forward etc multiple times per week or even per show. most of the time one of the things their tech support recommends fixes it, sometimes for a few days, sometimes for a few hours, and often only a few minutes. it’s time consuming to work with their support people, only to have it repeat the problem over and over. guess i will start researching for a new brand.
at first, the roku was great. it breathed new life into our smart tv and supports 4k hdr. however the remote has always been a little funny and often would repeatedly turn the tv on and off when we go to turn it on for the first time in a day.now, we are 4 months past the warranty period and the device frequently freezes crashes to the boot screen. i cannot recommend this product anymore.
i really like roku have one in the guest room, the remote is great and it’s so easy to use and set up. got one for our main tv, we have a samsung speaker but for some reason the roku isn’t compatible with our speaker and doesn’t find the device.i bought the new firestick that does hook up to our speaker but the new remote is horrible. no power or volume buttons. but since it works with our bluetooth speaker the roku gets returned and amazon says.
the streaming is fine and the homepage is pretty intuitive to use. biggest issue is the remote cannot control a soundbar. if you have one hooked to your tv i would avoid this and go with a fire stick.
overall, we have been happy with the roku itself in the past year. the one thing that we don’t like about it is the remote control. the buttons on the side (volume mute) work really well and has taken some time to adjust to. the biggest issue we have has is with the buttons. at first, it didn’t seem that bad, but i think it could be getting worse and is very annoying. we are having to press the buttons really hard to make it work—it’s mostly the direction arrows, but the play button can also be difficult. if it weren’t for the remote, we would give it 5 stars.
the device works well for nonsmart tv, but doesn't work without the remote and the remote has stopped working 3 months after purchase. tried replacing batteries several times with different brands to no avail. remote just doesn't work you have to purchase a whole new device.
this is our second roku. i liked the ease of the first one so much that i bought the second for another room. unfortunately this remote has been freezing multiple times each day from day 1. i should have returned it but thought it may just be an update issue. so far nothing has helped and continues to freeze.
this is my second roku where the remote doesn’t respond to the receiver even after new batteries, the screen is green even after taking out and replugging hdmis, image is blinking on the screen, and the volume will auto max increase when i’m trying to turn it down. i’m beyond frustrated with roku.
do not buy this device there is zero support when you have issues! i have spent days trying to find out why my remote won’t navigate so i can connect to wifi!
i have 2 rokus and they both constantly have issue with the remote just ceasing to connect to/control the device. the remote will still control tv volume so i know it is not a battery issue. it is a device to remote connection problem and the fact that it happens with 2 different roku sticks bought a year apart, tells me its a larger product issue.
received unit with old, weak batteries, {insulating tab installed as received). remote operation intermittent with frequent lock ups. contacted ram at roku support website (chat box) about problem. chat suspended after ram no longer responded. received follow up email from roku to follow up chat. i responded to email but never received a response.once i deduced that changing the batteries might be worth a try, remote now working very much better, but still hangs up occasionally. unfortunately, by the time i figure out the weak batteries shipped, the amazon return window had closed.unfortunately i am stuck with a remote that likes to lock up now and then with no recourse due to the amazon return window closure, and lack of competent roku support.i would not recommend this product.
