i'm a big fan of this company's cheaper premium green tea, which is smoky and rich to my palate, so i had high hopes for this higher-grade offering. it was a pleasure to unbox and open the sealed bag within the tin, and i was intrigued by the pumpernickel notes that arose for me from the long beautiful leaves. unfortunately, brewing brought out canned vienna sausage notes, or less-than-fresh fish, on top of said pumpernickel bread. i like weird, and it's an interesting-enough weird that i have to give it some credit, but i regret not having spent the money on the goodness of a 16-ounce tin of its lower-grade relative instead. i'll update this if i find a way to brew it in a more-favorable way.
the tea has that fishy smell that is indicative of a poorly stored tea. it has a strong, bitter taste. like earwax bitter. it's not disgusting, it's drinkable. but i was disappointed.
upon opening the cake, i detected a fishy smell. after brewing it and taking a bite, i was disappointed to find it tasted like fish. it seems the cake wasn't stored or fermented properly.
i decided to try this tea because it's around 1/2 the price of the tea i normally buy. big mistake!the smell of the tea when i first opened the bag was very good. but i noticed immediately that there were quite a few stems mixed in with the leaves. i've included a picture of this tea in picture one. the third picture is of another brand of tea that i buy on amazon that i included for comparison.the color and aroma were good after steeping. my biggest problem is this flavor is markedly weak compared with other brands i've bought on amazon.i tried to return this, but it's not eligible for return! now i have a big bag of inferior tea that i'm not going to drink. i should've known better. you get what you pay for.update: the seller gave me a full refund for the tea.
my regular japanese green tea is out of stock. tried this as replacement. lordy it tastes awful. black dots inside rolled leaves. bugs? dirt? who knows. only the exterior leaf is whole, everything inside rolled ball is pieces of leaf. i followed instructions. smelled very vegetal. tastes horrible. do not recommend
this tea is very disappointing. it leaves are cut irregularly and in very large leaves. the flavor is very poor. i would never again buy tea from this company. is there a way to credit my account?
although the tea did have a strong seaweed aroma and taste, the tea was overly bitter and burnt tasting with any brewing methods i used. cold brew and brewing at optimal conditions for green tea all lead to an undrinkable cup, disappointing.
i bought this for a change because i like green tea and wanted to try something a little more exotic. yuck. horrible. when it was brewing it made the whole room smell like cigarette ashes. it tasted the same. and it’s colorless.
the size, initial scent and look of the cake looked great! i wanted to buy my first taste of chinese red tea using a gift card for amazon. i got everything for a traditional chinese tea experience. however, when i initially went to break off a piece, the cake was dense. i know these were packed but i practically had to hammer a piece off, and not only that the leaves all broke off into smaller flakes and pieces which already confused me since i know a cake should be packed but not flaking off ( i had researched what a good cake should be like before hand )i at first thought maybe it was just how i broke it off? unfortunately as i did my first wash steep, and proceeded to take a good sniff test of the tea. the scent gave off a heavy fishy aroma. and not only that the tea was extremely dark even on the first wash.i've tried chinese rolled and roasted tea before in actual tea houses and shops in san francisco. and i was very surprised how dense and unpleasant the smell that came from it was. i tried doing a few more pours, swallowing what i could from the first couple steeps hoping it would taste better... but it didn't.i know how good chinese quality tea should taste and this cake was extremely flaky ( creating a dark water quality. the picture i included is only the second/third steep and i couldn't see the white bottom of the cup ), fishy scented and bitter with a sort of odd after taste. i couldn't finish the last couple of cups i know i could have gotten from the few grams i chipped off.i knew i was taking a risk not ordering from a team shop near me or at least going in store to buy a cake i can examine myself. but the fact i spent $20+ dollars on 350 grams that i am now reluctant to drink and now can't return i am just overall unsatisfied...packaged well but horrible taste, scent and color. i know how low quality tea tastes and unfortunately even though i had high hopes for this cake with so many good reviews... gotta say can't recommend..edit :fortunately the seller did acknowledge the situation and messaged me for a refund personally which i appreciate. i might reconsider buying from them again but might just get a green tea or something else besides a cake. poor storage or packing of a cake could lead to the dense fishy scent and taste. so overall the quality of the batch could have been bad. i appreciate the refund and have changed from 1 star to three in good spirits of the situation
i broke off a bit. threw out the first steep. tasted the next and hated it. smelled reminiscent of fish and i generally was not pleased. i could brewed those leaves and the result was palatable but not good by any means. haven't touched the cake since then. might see if i can use it up by making kombucha but also don't want to ruin my scoby.
