i’ve experienced overheating with 3 different roku steaming stick models purchased between 2017-2022. the roku stick 4k was only used a few times in a spare room by guests, yet it overheats less than 30 minutes after being plugged into the tv or hdmi switch.none of the troubleshooting tips recommended by roku resolved the problems their tech support said overheating is a defect. conveniently they only offer a 1 year warranty their solution was for me to buy yet another roku device. i’ll buy a different brand or upgrade to a smart tv as opposed to lining roku’s pockets with my hard earned cash.major fire safety hazard!!!
do not expect this to last forever. we have experienced 2.5 years max. when it goes out it will get blazing hot and the tv screen goes black. nothing is built to last anymore.
worked great for about a year but now cuts off due to high heat. will not buy this one again. cs no help as the warranty expired. not happy with roku...
my unit is something i bought at a wholesale club a few years back... so i assume this issue has been resolved on newer units. we didn't have a 4k tv until last fall. so that's the first time we got to actually see some real 4k videos on youtube... and it would overheat in about 10 minutes and shut down. i've been to their support forum and they were handing out free short hdmi extension cables to move the unit further away from the tv to get more air circulation. it took a month to get that cable and it didn't work. i knew because i already had moved the unit to an hdmi switcher. so my case is in limbo right now. i got frustrated at the forum. i don't know if they'll replace the unit. up until we tried the 4k, the unit worked fine for years. until the issue is resolved i turned down the resolution to 1080p. so does anyone know if they've found a fix for older units?
this thing worked fairly well for quite a while, had some minor issues that seemed to be resolved by using a dedicated usb power adapter. the most irritation i had was logging into the max app using the roku remote, instead of activating on another device like the other apps will let you do. but that's on max, not roku.seems like all of a sudden this thing just crapped out. remote barely seems to work; i.e. you push buttons and 20s later maybe something will happen on the screen. reboot the thing and it fails to connect to my wifi. try to reconnect to wifi, but oh yeah, the remote is barely working. clear the saved wifi password, retype password and magically it connects. try to open hulu/max/whatever app and the system lags so hard it won't even stream a single video. i highly suspect there's an over-heating issue with this model. no active cooling and it's stuck right behind my tv panel with minimal airflow.i've been through this once before, and a factory reset seemed to help. but it looks like the problem reappears over time. so sick of this thing, it's going into the trash. save yourself the headache and get something else.
i’ve been using rokus for about five years. for the first few years they have worked well. the past couple of years i’ve been having problems with the unit responding to commands from the remote control, mostly the volume and mute functions but not just those buttons. i thought mine was just getting old so ordered this one intending to replace my current roku. i didn’t install it right away since i could always find a way to make my old roku work again, such as unplugging it and plugging it back in, swapping remote battery positions, etc. often it would just start working again on its own after a half hour or so. anyway, my friend had an emergency need for a roku so i gave her my new one and installed it for her. after only a few uses it’s having similar and worse issues. i don’t know what to do.also, while streaming 4k content on my older roku it gives me on-screen messages that it is overheating.
i purchased two of these to replace older roku models. one of them ran 'hot' to the touch and stopped working after 6 months. the other, which i'm still using, doesn't receive the wifi signal as well as the older roku device and reception is spotty. i've gone back to the roku express which works very well.
